Now don’t get me wrong, if the pitcher lays a meatball over the plate on the first pitch then by all means GO FOR IT! This isn’t a “You must see at least 5 pitches before you can hit” type of rule. You’ll learn a lot faster and you’ll have an advantage before you even step into the box. It’s important to pay attention to other at-bats besides your own. The number nine batter in the lineup should have the pitcher’s patterns down before they even get up to their first at-bat. What is her strikeout pitch? The more pitches a hitter can see, the more pitches their teammates get to see as well. What does the pitcher throw when she gets ahead or falls behind. In the dugout, players should be learning and studying from other teammates at-bats to see what the pitcher is throwing. Your teammates get to see more pitches before they hit. But if hitters are working the count and fouling off pitches, there’s a better chance of putting wear and tear on the pitcher. If hitters are seeing three pitches each at-bat, then the pitcher could last all game. Regardless of the result, sometimes a team strategy if a pitcher is dominating them, is to focus on quality at-bats and get the pitcher to get tired because she has to throw more pitches. More pitches force the pitcher to work harder and hopefully get more tired. Once you’ve seen everything they have, you now have the advantage. If you don’t get to a pitcher’s curveball until your 3 rd at-bat, now you’re at a disadvantage. This is important especially early in the game because you want to know what all of the pitcher’s pitches look like. You get to see more of what the pitcher throws. When hitters see more pitches in an at-bat, there are a lot of benefits that most people don’t think about. If a hitter is having a quality at-bat, they should be seeing AT LEAST 5 pitches. The average batter sees between 4-6 pitches during their at-bat. ![]()
